Alright, I suppose it’s been a while!
Today, after long last, I decided to transfer my domains from a local registrar to an US registrar.
There were many reason for the change. First and foremost is of course cost; even with currency exchange, it’s still cheaper to use US registrar - and by US registrar, I mean Porkbun. It’s about same price for everyone else, really. Second, the DNS record management of local registrar depend on a hosting package with cpanel. Problem is, I’m also soured on the hosting package - it’s pretty expensive, for one, and I mostly use it for email hosting anyway, and since I moved to Protonmail for email hosting, I don’t really want to bother with it anymore.
So, there’s that.
Instead, I’m gonna get VPS, then administrate my own site that way. Quite neat, don’t you think? And yes, I likely will move this site away to the VPS. Haven’t bought it yet, mostly because my domain transfer has yet to be done, so might as well wait until then.
Ironically, I end-up paying more expensive price. Proton Unlimited is IDR 1.330.668. My hosting plan with one domain is IDR 1.563.879. The other domain is IDR 254.079, for a total of IDR 1.817.958. Meanwhile, my new domains both will cost around IDR 190.000 each, so that’s IDR 380.000 total. Combined with Proton Unlimited, that’s 1.710.668.
….
Which is, you know, still cheaper?? Hey, you know what, maybe I don’t need VPS after all. A USD 4.2 a month VPS from OVH will set me back around USD 50.4 with discount, which is around IDR 841.730. That’ll make my ‘digital existence’ cost to IDR 2.552.398. Quite a lot more expensive!
Getting one of those bargain-basement IONOS VPS will cut it by around a half, which is still more expensive, but not that bad. Perhaps it’s something to consider, eh?
The main reason I want VPS is for digital sovereignty thingy, but I think neocities is… fine. For now. Worse come to worst, maybe I’ll just redirect to my tumblr or something eh. But let’s get this written-up and uploaded to my site.
